LEADERSHIP - LESSON SIX
PUMPING IRON
You will need your Bible and a pen & notebook to complete these lessons. You should be able to copy and paste these outlines to your word processor and print them without difficulty if you so desire. We recommend you record in your note book deep thoughts or questions that may arise as you study, and certainly record all things God reveals to your heart. Look over these notes frequently and use them even as you pray. God will cause you to grow in wisdom and understanding. Keep your note book with you throughout the day as much
as possible to record all God reveals to you and to review the things you have learned.
We also recommend you make a habit of memorizing a scripture each week. This not only helps get the Word deep in your heart, but is also an excellent mental exercise.
PUMPING IRON
As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
Proverbs 27:17
For far to long it has been left to church leadership to continually build up the body of Christ. Leaders are a gift from God to the body, but relying on them solely and not taking our own responsibilities to each other only hurts our own spiritual growth. Each one of us has something to offer, and even if it is as simple as a friendly greeting at times, it is still an important part of body ministry.
Sadly, our culture has shaped our thinking to focus on ourselves first rather than others. This is simply human nature without the guidance of Holy Spirit. As born again, Spirit filled believers, God has something better for us. Our focus of brotherly love toward each other is what will truly lead to our own benefit. You can’t sow love and not reap it. Sowing and reaping is a spiritual law. It always occurs. Because of this principle we will consider some ways to build others up spiritually, and in the process see that this is a fast track to spiritual growth for ourselves. As we build up others we too will be built up.
Your Spiritual Workout Routine
1. Stay hydrated.
Proverbs 11:25 A generous person will prosper; Whoever refreshes others will also
be refreshed. (NIV) [NKJV says he who waters…]
2. Proper Diet.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth
not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.
- We can’t correctly minister when we don’t have an understanding. Whatever is our
weakest link is where we can fall short, and where the enemy can attack.
3. Stay Focused!
2 Timothy 1:13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me,
in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.
- If we don’t stick with our training consistently, we shouldn’t expect optimum results.
4. Keep motivated! (Use your gifts)
2 Timothy 1:6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you…
5. Rest and recovery.
Matthew 11:28-29 & Hebrews 4:11
Conclusion: By staying on top of things in our own spiritual life we become usable to God and of benefit to others. This is God’s plan. As a body of believers, when one of us is falling short in any area, we all miss out. Everyone of us have gifts and a calling, and we aren’t walking complete in God’s best if a part is out of joint. Let’s determine to keep ourselves refreshed and become a refreshment for others. Together we can build a body that can shake this world!
